National Assembly

Chad's parliament building occupies a prominent position on one of the main avenues east of the city centre. The structure dates from the colonial period, and despite subsequent renovations and additions it retains some of the civic ambition of the late French administration. The building is not open to visitors, but the exterior and the surrounding tree-lined avenue are worth seeing as a piece of the city's official geography.

The neighbourhood around the National Assembly is one of the more orderly parts of N'Djamena, with government ministries and the occasional foreign embassy nearby. Walking this area gives a sense of how the city's formal institutions are arranged, which contrasts usefully with the controlled chaos of the Grand Marché a few kilometres away. Don't photograph the building or any security installations in the vicinity without checking first — photographing government buildings in Chad is inadvisable.
