Restaurant Le Carnivore

Le Carnivore is one of the better-known restaurants in N'Djamena, a longstanding fixture on the expat and diplomat circuit. As the name suggests, the emphasis is on grilled meat. Bush meat and game appear on the menu alongside more conventional beef and chicken; the speciality is meat grilled over charcoal and served with sides of rice or plantain. It is not cheap by local standards but reasonable by the standards of what passes for a restaurant meal in a West African capital.

The atmosphere is relaxed without being pretentious. Tables are often shared among aid workers, oil company staff, and the occasional journalist passing through. It is the kind of place where you can eat adequately, drink a cold Flag, and get a useful update on what is happening in the city from whoever happens to be sitting at the next table. Reservations are not usually necessary, but the kitchen can be slow on busy evenings.
