Hot Springs (Bir El-Ghaba)

Bahariya Oasis sits above a vast underground water system that keeps the oasis springs flowing even in this hyper-arid environment. The most popular bathing spot is Bir El-Ghaba ("Forest Well"), an outdoor pool fed by a hot sulphur spring at around 35–40°C, surrounded by palm trees about 15 km north of Bawiti. The water is sulphurous and has a slightly milky appearance; locals attribute various therapeutic properties to it.

A cooler spring pool near the main road (Bir El-Mattar) offers bathing at around 28°C, pleasanter in summer. Both springs are accessible by tuk-tuk or taxi from Bawiti. Swimming dress is conservative at both — these are family bathing spots, not tourist beach facilities. Visiting in the afternoon on a weekday is quieter; weekends bring Egyptian families in considerable numbers.

A story
The hot springs at Bir El-Ghaba sit in a grove of date palms about 15 km from Bawiti. The water emerges from the ground at around 40°C, sulphur-rich and slightly milky, and flows into a pool deep enough to swim in. Egyptian families come here on weekends from Bawiti and Cairo to soak and picnic under the palms. The combination of hot mineral water, palm shade, and open desert horizon is one of the more unlikely pleasures of the Western Desert.
