Nile Corniche Cafes

Nile-side cafes and floating restaurants along Giza's eastern waterfront

The eastern edge of Giza runs along the Nile, and the corniche road here is lined with cafes, tea houses, and floating restaurants moored to the bank. The scene is busiest on Thursday and Friday evenings when Cairenes come out in family groups to sit by the river, drink tea, smoke shisha, and enjoy the relative cool of the waterfront. Several of the floating restaurants serve alcohol; the cafes generally do not.

The view is across to Cairo's eastern bank, with the glittering lights of the city reflected in the Nile at night. For a more local experience, take a felucca (traditional wooden sailboat) for an evening hour on the water — boatmen congregate near the Mena House area and along the main corniche. Prices are negotiable; an hour's sail at sunset is a reasonable and pleasant thing to do.
