Shopping

The souvenir market around the Giza Plateau sells Egyptian goods at prices that start high and expect negotiation. The standard stock includes alabaster figurines, papyrus paintings, cartouche jewellery, scarab pendants, shawls, and miniature pyramids in every material. Quality varies from excellent to very poor; the difference is usually visible. For serious craft shopping, Cairo's Khan el-Khalili bazaar (30 minutes away) has a wider selection and better quality at the top end.

The real commercial life of Giza is in its local markets and the covered souk areas around the older neighbourhoods. Here you find food markets, fabric shops, household goods, and the daily trade of a large Egyptian city — less interesting for souvenirs but far more interesting as an experience of the place.
