Camel and Horse Riding

Camel and horse riding circuits of the Giza Plateau

The Giza Plateau is large enough that walking it in full sun takes real effort, and the traditional way to cover it is by camel or horse. Operators with both animals are stationed at Panorama Point near the south-western edge and at various points inside the complex. A full circuit of the plateau by camel takes 45 minutes to an hour and gives you a commanding view of the monuments from above the usual crowd level.

Negotiation is essential and unavoidable: agree the price before you mount, get it clear whether the price includes the ride back or just one direction, and do not pay until you are back on the ground. The standard tactic is to agree one price and then demand double or triple when you dismount, claiming the original price was one-way. Be firm, stay calm, and the touts will move on. Once that is sorted, riding between the pyramids on a camel under a blue sky is, frankly, magnificent. A horse is faster and easier to control; a camel is the more photogenic option.
