Andrea Restaurant

Classic Egyptian grill on a Nile boat, popular with Cairenes for decades

Andrea is a Cairene institution: a large open-air Egyptian restaurant that has been feeding families, politicians, and tourists for decades. It specialises in the Egyptian grill tradition — rotisserie chicken cooked over charcoal, lamb chops, kofta, and the full spread of mezze that comes before the meat. The setting is a farmhouse complex with a garden and duck pond.

This is where Cairenes bring family groups for celebration meals, which means the food has to be consistently good or the regulars would have moved on long ago. The portions are large, the prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere is lively rather than hushed. There are branches in several Cairo locations; the original is in Ahramat (the Pyramids Road area). No alcohol is served, but the fresh juices are excellent.
