Giza Pyramid Souvenir Bazaar

The souvenir market at the pyramid entrance, with papyrus, alabaster, and jewellery

The streets leading up to the Giza Plateau entrance are lined with souvenir shops and informal stalls selling the full range of Egyptian tourist goods: papyrus paintings (many made from banana leaf rather than real papyrus — ask to see the flexibility test), alabaster miniature pyramids and Sphinxes, gold and silver cartouche jewellery with your name in hieroglyphics, pashmina shawls, and pharaonic-theme everything.

Prices here are among the highest in Egypt for comparable goods, because the tourist traffic is the highest. Everything is negotiable, and the first price quoted is typically two to four times what the vendor will accept. If you are serious about buying, name your price and walk away; you will often be followed. The better alabaster pieces — carved with real weight and detail — are genuinely attractive objects. The cotton scarves and wraps are useful for the desert heat and cheap enough to be worth buying without extensive bargaining. Avoid the "authentic" papyrus unless you ask them to demonstrate its flexibility (real papyrus bends without cracking; imitations snap).
