The Luxor Corniche runs along the East Bank of the Nile for several kilometres, from the Winter Palace in the south past Luxor Temple and the Mummification Museum to the Karnak boat landing. It is the city's social spine, used by locals for evening promenades and by tourists navigating between temples.
The Corniche is at its best in the evening: the day's heat has dropped, the light on the West Bank cliffs turns pink and orange, and the feluccas drift along the river. During the day it is busier and hotter, with persistent offers of boat trips and taxi rides. Several good riverside cafes and the terrace of the Winter Palace Hotel overlook the river. The evening walk from the Winter Palace to Luxor Temple — about 700 metres along the water — is one of Luxor's simple pleasures, particularly after the temple itself is floodlit.
