Mount Fentale

Mount Fentale rises over the western side of Awash National Park, a dormant stratovolcano whose crater dominates the skyline. It gives the park much of its drama: black lava, dry grass, and open views across the Rift Valley.

Climbing or driving near Fentale depends on road conditions, heat, and local advice. Even if you do not reach the crater rim, the volcano is worth seeking out as a landscape feature. It makes clear that Awash is not just a wildlife park but a volcanic one.

A story
Fentale's broad caldera is a reminder that Awash sits in one of the most geologically active parts of Africa. The volcano last erupted in the nineteenth century, and the surrounding lava fields still look raw in places.
