The Danakil Depression is not independently accessible. All visits must be arranged through a licensed tour operator in Mekele, the regional capital of Tigray and the main staging point for Danakil tours. The standard tour runs three to four days and combines the Dallol hydrothermal field, the Lake Asale salt flats, and the Erta Ale volcano.
Getting to Mekele: Ethiopian Airlines operates daily flights from Addis Ababa to Mekele (about 1.5 hours). From Mekele, tours depart in 4WD vehicles and take 4-6 hours on rough roads to reach the Danakil. An armed escort from the Afar Regional Security Authority is mandatory and is arranged by tour operators — do not attempt to enter the depression without one. Tour prices typically include transport, guide, armed escort fee, food, and camping equipment. Book well in advance in the October-March high season.
Note: the Tigray region experienced a devastating civil war from 2020 to 2022. Check current security conditions and the operational status of tour operators before planning a visit, as the situation has been volatile and may affect logistics and access.
