Things to Do

The Danakil's sights are its geological extremes. Dallol is the centrepiece — the acid pools and mineral colours of the hydrothermal field are unlike anything else on earth. The Lake Asale salt flats and the ancient camel salt caravans that cross them connect this alien landscape to one of the world's oldest continuous trading traditions. The night ascent to Erta Ale for a view of the permanently active lava lake is one of the most extraordinary experiences available to any traveller. The Gaet'ale Pond near Dallol is the saltiest body of water you are likely to encounter. All of these are accessible only through organised tours departing from Mekele.
