Lake Afrera (Afdera)

Large hypersaline lake in the Danakil Depression where salt is still harvested from evaporating brine.

Lake Afrera, also written Afdera, is a broad salt lake in the southern Danakil Depression, lying well below sea level in one of the hottest inhabited landscapes on earth. Unlike the hard salt flats of Lake Asale, salt here is gathered from evaporating brine, giving the shore a more industrial, working feel.

The lake is remote and usually reached as part of a serious Danakil expedition rather than a casual detour. The water, salt pans, and volcanic backdrop make a stark scene, but heat and logistics dominate everything; travel with an experienced operator and plenty of water.
