Jimma is navigable on foot in the centre, but the Palace of Abba Jifar and the university campus require transport. Bajajs (three-wheeled auto-rickshaws) are the main form of local transport and cover the whole city; fares are negotiated before you get in and are very low by any standard. Line taxis — converted minivans running fixed routes — connect the city's main neighbourhoods but require knowing the routes, which limits their usefulness for visitors.
For the Aba Jifar Palace, a bajaj from the city centre takes around 20 minutes. For Lake Boye and other points outside the urban area, hiring a bajaj or negotiating with a driver for a half-day is more practical than trying to use public transport. The central market area is walkable from most accommodation in the city.
