When to Go

Jimma sits at around 1,780 metres and has a tropical monsoon climate moderated by altitude. Temperatures are consistent year-round — afternoon highs of 24–27°C and cool mornings around 12–13°C — and the city never gets the extreme heat of the lowlands. This makes it comfortable to visit at almost any time.

The main consideration is the rainy season, which runs from March to October and peaks between June and September. During the peak rains, roads to surrounding areas can become difficult, particularly tracks leading to forest reserves and rural attractions. The dry season from November to February is the most reliable time for travel and for visiting the coffee forests around Jimma, when the roads are in better condition and the heat is at its most pleasant.

The coffee harvest takes place between October and December, when the surrounding forests and plantations are at their most active. This is an interesting time to visit for anyone interested in the coffee trade — farmers are picking, processing facilities are running, and the market is at its liveliest with fresh beans coming in from the highlands.
