Lake Boye

Lake Boye, also known as Boye Dam, is a reservoir a few kilometres south of Jimma city and the best birdwatching site in the area. Pelicans, great white egrets, various species of heron, grebes, and ducks gather on the water, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon. The surrounding wetland vegetation attracts a wider range of species than the open water alone, and patient visitors can expect a solid list even on a short visit.

The lake is a popular spot for Jimma residents at weekends — local families come to sit by the water, and there are usually a few fishing boats out on the reservoir. The setting is pleasant: green hills descend to the water on all sides, and the light in the early morning is good for photographs. Bajajs run to the area from the city centre, or you can hire a vehicle for the short drive. There are no formal facilities at the waterside, so bring water and whatever else you need.
