Takoradi's strongest suit is its location. Within an hour or two in any direction, you can reach some of the most rewarding places on the Ghanaian coast. To the west, the beach villages of Busua, Dixcove, and Butre offer palm-backed sand, good surf, and small fishing communities that still feel largely off the tourist trail. To the east, Elmina and Cape Coast have the most significant slave-trade fortresses in sub-Saharan Africa — deeply moving places that should not be missed.
Shared taxis and trotros cover most of these routes cheaply, if slowly. For the eastern forts, a hired taxi for the day makes more sense and gives you time to linger.
