Bissau Cathedral

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Candelaria (Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Candelária) is a substantial colonial-era church in the centre of Bissau, one of the few large buildings in the city in reasonably good repair. The exterior is a straightforward Portuguese colonial design; the interior is more atmospheric, with good light in the late afternoon filtering through the stained glass. Services are still held regularly and the church is the main Catholic presence in a city that is majority Muslim.

The cathedral sits on the edge of the old colonial quarter, a few minutes' walk from the Presidential Palace. The square in front is a useful landmark and gathering point.
