Getting Around

By Bus

The most comfortable way to travel between cities is by coach. UTB and several private companies run air-conditioned services connecting Abidjan to Yamoussoukro, Bouaké, Man, Korhogo, and San-Pédro. Prices are reasonable — a ticket from Abidjan to Yamoussoukro runs around 2,500 FCFA, to Man around 5,000–7,000 FCFA. Book ahead for busy routes or weekend travel.

By Bush Taxi

Bush taxis (shared Peugeot 504s or minibuses) cover routes that buses don't, and leave when full rather than on a fixed schedule. They are cheaper than buses but slower and less predictable. For shorter hops between towns they remain the standard option.

In Cities

Abidjan has a reasonable taxi network. Shared taxis (woro-woro) run fixed routes at low fares; metered or chartered taxis can be negotiated for longer or more direct trips. Minibuses known as gbakas are cheap but often overcrowded — fine for short urban hops, uncomfortable for anything longer. Ride-hailing apps (including local options) operate in Abidjan and are increasingly useful.

By Car

Rental cars are available in Abidjan from around 30,000 FCFA per day. The highway network out of Abidjan is in decent shape, but roads in the northwest and the deep forest zones can be rough, especially after rain. A 4WD is advisable for any rural itinerary in the wet season. Police checkpoints are common — carry your documents at all times.

Driving Tips

Driving at night outside of major cities is not advised. Unmarked potholes, unlit vehicles, and pedestrians on the roadway make it genuinely hazardous. Fill up in larger towns; fuel stations are sparse in the west and north.
