Grand-Bassam Beach

The beach at Grand-Bassam stretches for several kilometres along the Atlantic south of the historic quarter, and on weekends it fills with families from Abidjan making the forty-kilometre trip to the coast. The sand is wide and pale, the surf is strong, and there are beach bars and food stalls operating from simple wooden structures along the shore.

Swimming here requires caution. The Atlantic coast of Côte d'Ivoire has a powerful shore break and undertow that makes it dangerous in places; watch what locals are doing and follow their lead. The calmer stretches close to the lagoon mouth are safer than the open ocean sections further along the beach.

The beach is at its liveliest on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, when Abidjanais arrive in numbers and the bars get busy. During the week it is quiet enough that you may have long stretches to yourself. Vendors sell grilled fish, plantain, and cold drinks along the shore throughout the day.
