Grand-Bassam is one of the best places in Côte d'Ivoire to buy traditional crafts. The artisan market that has developed in the historic quarter over the past two decades brings together craftspeople from across the country, working in wood, bronze, fabric, and ceramics. The colonial buildings provide an atmospheric backdrop, and the concentration of sellers means prices are competitive.
Bargaining is expected. Start at around half the first asking price and negotiate from there. Most sellers are practised at this and enjoy it; an aggressive opening offer is not offensive, just the beginning of a conversation.
