Lake Baringo is a large, shallow freshwater lake in the Rift Valley, north of Marigat and roughly 270 kilometres northwest of Nairobi. Once a productive fishing lake, it has been heavily overfished in recent years, but remains one of Kenya's premier birdwatching destinations — over 450 species have been recorded here. The many islands and papyrus-fringed shoreline make boat trips a highlight.
The village of Kampi ya Samaki, on the western shore, is the main base. Robert's Camp is the most popular place to stay — you can camp or book a banda, and boat trips to the islands can be arranged from here. The Lake Baringo Club, a little further along the shore, has a swimming pool, restaurant, and grounds that attract hornbills and other birds right to the breakfast table.
To get here from Nakuru, take the B4 north and continue 15 kilometres past Marigat. Matatus run from Nakuru to Marigat, and from there to the lake.
