Mombasa runs on tuk-tuks — three-wheeled rickshaws that are everywhere on the island and the cheapest way to get around the old town and downtown. Agree the fare before getting in. Matatus (minibus taxis) cover the longer routes to the North and South Coast beaches and to the mainland suburbs; they are cheap, chaotic, and not particularly comfortable. For trips between the city and the main beach hotels at Diani Beach, the Likoni Ferry (free for foot passengers) crosses the harbour to the south coast every few minutes — expect crowds and a slow, colourful experience. Taxis and Uber are reliable if pricier. For longer-distance travel, the SGR standard-gauge railway runs from Mombasa's Miritini terminus to Nairobi in about five hours — a smooth, modern ride, and much more pleasant than the old overnight train it replaced.
