Kisite Marine Park and Wasini Island

Remote marine park and Wasini Island, with dolphins and pristine reef

Kenya's most rewarding marine destination, reached by boat from Shimoni village about 80 kilometres south of Diani. Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park protects a section of pristine coral reef with exceptional visibility and abundant fish life. The Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins that live here are encountered on almost every trip.

The standard day trip combines snorkelling in the marine park with a visit to Wasini Island — a small, vehicle-free island with a Swahili village, a famous seafood lunch at the Mpunguti Restaurant, and a walk through a coral garden. Most operators run trips from Diani with an early start. The journey each way takes about 90 minutes but the day is consistently described by visitors as the highlight of their south coast stay.

A story
Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park is one of the least visited marine parks in Kenya partly because it takes effort to reach — the jumping-off point is the small fishing village of Shimoni, about 80 kilometres south of Diani. The reward is a reef that receives far less boat traffic than those near Diani, and a resident pod of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins that are almost always present.
