South of Mombasa

Kenyan coast south of Mombasa, linking Shelly, Tiwi, and Diani beaches behind the coral reef.

The coastline south of Mombasa is Kenya's classic beach stretch — a long run of white coral-sand beaches fringed by casuarina trees, with the Indian Ocean warm and clear on the other side of the reef. From Likoni, the short ferry crossing from Mombasa, the coast road heads south past three distinct beaches: Shelly, Tiwi, and Diani. Each has its own character, and together they make up the most visited beach destination in Kenya.

Shelly Beach is the closest to Mombasa, a twenty-minute walk or short matatu ride from the Likoni ferry. It is the most accessible but also the most modest of the three — convenient for a day trip from Mombasa rather than a destination in itself.

Tiwi Beach, the next along, is the least developed and the most peaceful. The beach is broad and uncrowded, the reef close enough to explore by snorkelling, and the pace slower than elsewhere on the coast. Getting there requires a matatu from the Likoni ferry followed by a short walk or lift down a gravel road; be cautious about walking that stretch alone.

Diani Beach is the flagship — 25 kilometres of brilliant white sand backed by forest, with a full reef visible at low tide. It draws the bulk of Kenya's beach tourists and has the most developed infrastructure: dive operators, kite-surfing schools, boat trips, and a strip of restaurants and bars. The Shimba Hills National Reserve lies just inland, making it easy to combine a beach stay with a wildlife excursion. Flights connect Diani's airstrip to the Masai Mara and other Kenyan destinations.

The best day trip from Diani is to Kisite Marine Park and Wasini Island, 80 kilometres south — pristine reef, resident dolphins, and a seafood lunch on a vehicle-free island.

The high season runs across January, April to early July, August to early September, and December. If you are travelling in those months, plan ahead — the coast fills quickly.
