The Kenya coast has two rainy seasons. The long rains fall from April through June and can be heavy, making some days on the beach impractical. The short rains arrive in October and November and are less reliable. The dry seasons — January to March and July to September — are the best times to visit.
July to September is the peak of the kite-surfing season, with the south-east trade wind (the kaskazi) blowing steadily. December through March offers hot, dry weather and the clearest water for snorkelling and diving. The Christmas and New Year period is the busiest time on the coast and rates are at their highest — book accommodation well in advance.
The Shimba Hills and inland areas are accessible year-round, though the roads into the reserve can become difficult in heavy rain. Kisite Marine Park visits are best in the dry season when sea conditions are calmer.
