Bombotown

Bombotown is the small Vai-speaking suburb of Robertsport, just to the north of the town centre. It is essentially a working fishing village — pirogues drawn up on the beach, women smoking and selling fish, kids playing in the shorebreak — and walking through it gives a good sense of the everyday rhythm of life on this stretch of coast.

There are no formal sights, but the small mosques, the lapa-and-thatch houses and the steady to-and-fro of the fishing boats are worth a slow morning. The Vai language is one of the few West African languages to have developed an indigenous script — Vai syllabary, invented around 1832 — and you may occasionally see it written on a sign.
