Cottons Point

Cottons Point is the most famous of Robertsport's five surf breaks — a long, fast, peeling left that wraps around the southern tip of Cape Mount and can hold rideable shape for hundreds of metres on a good day. It works most consistently between May and October, when southwest swells funnel into the cape, and it is widely considered one of the best left-handers in West Africa.

The wave is suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers; the takeoff is fast and the reef is shallow on the inside, so beginners are better off at the gentler Fisherman's Point break a little to the north. Boards can be rented from the surf camps in town, and a small but skilled group of local Liberian surfers has emerged here over the last decade — many of them happy to take visitors out and show them the line-ups.

A story
The wave at Cottons was first surfed seriously by Liberian-American surfer Alfred Lomax and a small group of locals after the civil war ended in 2003. They went on to found the Robertsport Community Works Program, training local kids and putting Liberian surfing on the map.
