Eastern Basilica

The Eastern Basilica, also known as the East Church, dates from the Byzantine period and once had a three-aisled nave, transept and single apse. It is one of the key Christian buildings at Apollonia.

The surviving traces are fragmentary but atmospheric. Walk it with a plan if possible, since the church makes more sense when you can connect the columns, wall lines and remains of mosaic floor into a single space.

A story
The eastern basilica was excavated in 1922, but enough mosaic traces survived to hint at the colour that once softened these stone ruins. Apollonia can look bleached today; in the 5th and 6th centuries it was not so plain.
