Theatre of Apollonia

The Theatre of Apollonia stands just outside the old city wall on the eastern side of the site. It is smaller and rougher than the famous theatre at Sabratha, but its setting is superb: stone seating, coastal light and the wind off the Mediterranean.

The structure is usually dated to the late Hellenistic period. Half the seating was cut into the rock of the acropolis slope, while the rest was built up, a practical solution that still makes the theatre easy to read on the ground.

A story
The theatre was built against the city wall, with part of its seating cut from the rock and part built up. That mix of engineering and landscape is typical of Apollonia, where the sea, slope and city fabric all press into one another.
