Underwater Harbour Ruins

Part of ancient Apollonia now lies below the surface. Blocks, harbour works and traces of buildings can be seen or studied offshore, especially in calm, clear conditions, though this is not a casual snorkelling attraction.

The drowned harbour is what makes Apollonia different from many inland ruin fields. Standing by the water, it is easy to imagine the town's original purpose as Cyrene's window to the Mediterranean.

A story
Apollonia's old harbour is partly underwater because the coast has shifted and subsided over time. Divers mapped submerged buildings here in the 1950s, turning the shoreline into one of the more unusual archaeological landscapes in Libya.
