Tripoli's old medina contains a series of covered souqs running through its narrow lanes. The most interesting are the metalwork souqs near the Karamanli Mosque, where craftsmen hammer copper and brass into trays, pots, and decorative pieces. The Turk Market and Al-Mushir Market are the main trading centres, selling spices, fabrics, and everyday goods alongside craft items.
The medina's lanes are genuinely atmospheric in a way that larger North African souqs sometimes are not — the scale is human, and the pace is slower. Mornings are the best time to visit, when light filters down through the covered walkways and the workshops are busy. The area around the Karamanli Mosque and the castle gate is the densest concentration of traditional commerce. Allow a couple of hours to wander without a plan.
