Mahajanga has flights through Amborovy Airport, about 8 km north of the centre, though schedules can change and should be checked locally. By road, taxi-brousse services connect with Antananarivo and the northern route via Maevatanana; expect a long day at best and longer if road conditions or vehicle changes intervene.
The city is also a natural staging point for Ankarafantsika National Park and the wider Boeny coast. Arrange onward transport before leaving town, because services thin out quickly once you move away from the main road.
