Mahajanga's sights are modest but satisfying: a huge town baobab, a lived-in waterfront, red-earth formations outside town, and easy beaches north along the coast. The best rhythm is to keep mornings for short excursions and save the waterfront for late afternoon, when the heat eases and the city comes out to walk.
