The Baobab of Mahajanga stands near the waterfront like a civic monument that happened to grow there. It is massive, ancient-looking, and impossible to miss, with a trunk wide enough to make the passing traffic look temporary.
Come near sunset, when families and vendors gather around the square and the heat finally loosens its grip. The tree is a short stop, but it gives you the city in miniature: sea air, street snacks, pousse-pousse bells, and everyone lingering a little longer than planned.
