When to Go

Madagascar has two main seasons: dry (April to October) and wet (November to March). The practical window for most travelers is April to October. The peak months of July and August are busy and prices on Nosy Be are at their highest; May–June and September–October offer similar weather with fewer tourists.

April to October (Dry Season)

This is the best time to visit for most of the country. Roads are passable, wildlife is easier to spot (animals concentrate around water sources), and hiking conditions are good. October is particularly rewarding for wildlife — baby lemurs appear in the parks, and humpback whales arrive off the west coast. July and August see the most visitors and the best whale-watching.

The dry season is also when the west and south — Morondava, the Avenue of the Baobabs, Isalo National Park, and the spiny forest near Tulear — are most accessible. These areas are baking hot in summer but can be impassable mud during the rains.

November to March (Wet Season)

The rainy season brings cyclones, flooding, and roads that turn into rivers. Cyclone risk is highest in January and February, particularly on the east coast. Much of the country's road network becomes unreliable or impassable.

That said, the wet season has its appeals. The landscapes are spectacularly lush, prices drop, and the highland plateau is pleasantly warm rather than cold. If you are staying in Antananarivo or traveling primarily by air, the rains need not derail your trip. The rainforests of the east coast (Ranomafana, Masoala) are actually easier to explore in lighter-rain periods — September to November on the east coast is the relative dry spell.

Regional Notes

  • East coast: humid year-round; September to November is the best window
  • Central highlands: cool winters (June–August, nights can be cold), warm summers, rains heaviest December–March
  • West and south: almost no rain April to November; intense heat November to March
  • Nosy Be (northwest): May to October is dry and ideal; April and November are transition months with some rain
