Lilongwe's restaurant scene is shaped by its role as a capital of international aid and diplomacy — there are more options than you might expect, but they cluster in Area 43 and Capital Hill rather than the Old Town. Indian restaurants are reliable and relatively cheap. For Malawian food, the Old Town market area and the small restaurants ("take-aways") near the bus station serve nsima (stiff maize porridge) with relishes of beans, dried fish, or meat. Lake fish — chambo, usipa, kampango — appear on many menus and are worth seeking out.
