Getting There

Lilongwe International Airport (LLW), also known as Kamuzu International Airport, sits about 25 km north of the city centre. Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, South African Airways, and a handful of other carriers operate connections to major African hubs; Ethiopian's route through Addis Ababa gives the widest range of onward options. A taxi from the airport to the city centre takes thirty to forty minutes and costs in the range of USD 20–30; agree the price before getting in.

Overland, Lilongwe is connected to Zambia, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe by long-distance buses. The main operator is AXA Coach, which runs services to Blantyre, Mzuzu, Lusaka, and Dar es Salaam. The main bus station is in the Old Town; arrive early as the good buses fill quickly. Minibus taxis cover shorter routes within Malawi but are crowded and slower.
