Getting Around

Lilongwe's two halves — Old Town and New Town (Capital Hill) — are separated by about three kilometres of highway, and there is no reliable public transport between them. Minibus taxis run between the two areas but are slow and confusing for first-time visitors. Taxis are the practical solution; agree a price before you get in, and expect to pay USD 3–8 for most cross-city trips.

Ride-hailing apps have a limited presence in Malawi, but some local options exist — ask at your hotel. Walking within either the Old Town or the New Town is feasible and generally safe in daylight. The New Town, with its wide planned avenues, is actually quite walkable between major points. The stretch of road connecting the two halves, however, is long and hot with no footpath, and is best done by vehicle.
