Getting There

Akjoujt sits on the paved N1 road between Nouakchott and Atar, roughly 250 kilometres northeast of the capital. Shared taxis and private 4WDs running between the capital and the Adrar region can drop you here, though few travellers make Akjoujt their final destination.

If you are driving yourself, this is one of the more straightforward desert-road legs in Mauritania, but do not treat it casually. Carry water, keep fuel topped up, and avoid night driving. Sand, livestock, and broken-down vehicles are more dangerous than the road surface.
