Mont Choisi

Quiet Mauritius beach area north of Grand Baie, with casuarina shade and calm shallow water.

Mont Choisi is a small beach area on the north coast of Mauritius, a few kilometres south of Grand Baie. It is one of those spots that tends to slip under the radar — quieter and more residential than the busy tourist strip at Grand Baie, but close enough that you can walk or drive there in minutes.

The beach at Mont Choisi is wide and sheltered, lined with casuarina trees that provide natural shade. The water is calm and shallow, making it a good spot for families and for swimming without fighting waves or crowds. On weekdays you may have long stretches of sand largely to yourself, a rarity on the popular north coast. Local food vendors sometimes set up near the beach, selling dholl puri and gateaux piment — cheap and delicious Mauritian street food.

Mont Choisi works well as a base for exploring the north of the island. Grand Baie has the restaurants, nightlife, and boat excursions, while Pereybere to the north offers another excellent beach. The village of Trou aux Biches, just south, has some of the best snorkelling on the island. From Mont Choisi you are well placed to reach all of these without being in the thick of the tourist bustle.

Things to Do

Mont Choisi's main draw is the beach itself — wide, sheltered, and backed by casuarina trees that provide natural shade. The calm, shallow water suits families and relaxed swimming. The real pleasure is the quietness: even in high season, weekday mornings can feel almost deserted compared to the busier stretch at nearby Grand Baie.

For more active options, the Grand Baie boat excursion operators are a short drive away, offering day trips to the northern offshore islands — Île Plate, Gabriel, and Coin de Mire — with snorkelling, dolphin watching, and picnics on the beach. The village of Trou-aux-Biches, a few kilometres south, has the best snorkelling on the north coast and a calmer atmosphere than Grand Baie. Mont Choisi itself is better for relaxing than sightseeing.
