Île Hermitage

A small, uninhabited island in the southern lagoon accessible by boat from Port Sud-Est or Graviers. The snorkelling around the island is excellent — the sea grass beds attract green sea turtles that graze there regularly, and the coral around the island's edges is in good condition. Local boatmen offer trips for a negotiable fee.

The crossing is short and usually calm within the lagoon. There's no shade on the island, so bring sun protection and water. Most boat trips to Hermitage combine it with a stop at Île aux Choux or a snorkel site on the nearby reef.

A story
Hermitage Island was named for a French hermit who reportedly lived there in the 18th century — a claim that seems entirely plausible given that it's now uninhabited and accessible only by boat. The surrounding sea grass beds are among the best places in the Rodrigues lagoon to find sea turtles.
