At low tide on the southern and eastern reef flats, you'll see women wading through shallow water with wicker baskets, hunting octopus. This is one of Rodrigues's most distinctive sights and a genuine cultural tradition rather than a performance for visitors. The octopus (ourite in Creole) is either sold fresh or dried on racks for export to Mauritius and elsewhere.
The best time to see it is during the lowest tides, which occur around the new and full moon. St. François and the coast around Graviers have the most accessible viewing. The women are generally accustomed to curious visitors but appreciate a respectful distance — don't wade into the reef behind them.
