St. Gabriel Cathedral

A large Catholic cathedral on a hill above the village of St. Gabriel, visible from a wide stretch of the central island. The setting is striking — an imposing pale building against the green hills, surrounded by small houses and tropical vegetation. The interior is simply furnished but has good stained glass.

The cathedral is the spiritual centre of the island; Mass on Sunday mornings draws from across Rodrigues. The surrounding hillside village has a few small shops and gives a good sense of everyday life away from the capital. The views down to the coast from the approach road are excellent.

A story
The cathedral was built in stages through the 20th century and dominates the surrounding hillside in a way that seems improbable for a community this size. It seats several thousand — many times the population of the village immediately around it — because it was designed to serve the entire island for major feast days.
