Lagoon Snorkelling and Diving

Rodrigues has some of the best snorkelling and diving in the Indian Ocean, largely because the island sees far fewer visitors than Mauritius and the reefs have been correspondingly less impacted. Several dive operators in Port Mathurin and Anse aux Anglais offer guided dives to the outer reef and to sites within the lagoon.

The inner lagoon is suitable for snorkellers: shallow, warm, and clear, with good coral gardens accessible by boat from most beaches. The outer reef dives are for certified divers and involve a short boat ride beyond the lagoon edge. Sites include Shark's Rock, a cleaning station where white-tip reef sharks congregate. Local operators can also arrange snorkel trips by glass-bottom boat for non-swimmers.

A story
The lagoon around Rodrigues is one of the largest enclosed lagoons in the world relative to the island's size — some 200 square kilometres of protected water ringed by barrier reef. The outer reef drops steeply and hosts sharks, rays, and healthy coral that has suffered less bleaching than reefs further west.
