Talborjt Neighbourhood

Talborjt (sometimes spelled Talborjt or Nouvelle Talborjt) is the part of Agadir where most Moroccans actually live — a working neighbourhood set back from the beach and away from the resort hotels, with cheap cafes, local shops, and simple restaurants serving tagine and couscous. It was the settlement area established after the 1960 earthquake, when the old city was completely destroyed and a new one had to be built from scratch.

The neighbourhood is where budget travellers and anyone wanting a less touristic experience will want to base themselves. Prices are lower here, the food is more genuine, and the atmosphere is entirely different from the beach boulevard. Walk through in the evening to see the local cafe culture — men playing cards and chess over mint tea, women shopping in the souq-style covered passages.
