Medina and Mellah

Azemmour's medina is one of the least-visited in Morocco and one of the most atmospheric. The streets are narrow, the houses are whitewashed, and the pace is genuinely unhurried — not because tourism has not yet arrived, but because the town has never really tried to attract it. The medina comprises three distinct quarters: the main old town, the kasbah, and the former mellah (Jewish quarter).

The mellah is particularly interesting to wander. Azemmour had a significant Jewish community until the mid-20th century, and the architecture reflects this — arched doorways, ornate window grilles, and the occasional Hebrew inscription still visible on a lintel. The synagogue has been restored. The kasbah, at the northern end of the medina, has fine views over the river and retains several original Portuguese-era buildings. The whole medina is compact enough that getting intentionally lost for an hour is straightforward and rewarding.
