Oum er-Rbia Riverbank

The Oum er-Rbia — Morocco's largest river — meets the Atlantic at Azemmour, and the view from the riverbank opposite the medina is one of the best in the country. The whitewashed walls of the old city, the Portuguese ramparts, and the minarets of the mosques reflect in the wide river, particularly beautiful in the late afternoon when the light is golden.

A path follows the south bank of the river from the road bridge towards the sea, passing through eucalyptus groves and ending near the beach at Haouzia. The walk takes about an hour and is quieter and more rewarding than the beach itself. Birds congregate at the river mouth during migration season — September to October and March to April — when waders, terns, and raptors pass through in numbers.
