The Azrou Rock is a black basalt outcrop in the middle of the town, the natural feature that gave the settlement its name and around which the old quarter grew up. From the central square, a short walk between the houses brings you to a footpath that climbs the side of the rock.
The summit is unremarkable in itself, but the view is the best in town: green-tiled roofs spreading out in every direction, the green-and-white minarets of the medina mosques, and the wooded ridges of the Middle Atlas rising behind. Locals come up to watch the sunset. The descent passes a handful of small shops selling rugs and silverware made in town.
