Tuesday Souk

Azrou's main weekly market runs every Tuesday on the open ground at the edge of town. It is one of the most important Berber markets in the Middle Atlas — farmers and traders come in from the surrounding villages with sheep, vegetables, mountain honey, dried herbs, and the woven carpets and blankets the region is known for.

The carpet area is the main draw for visitors: piles of striped Beni Ouarain, Marmoucha, and Beni M'Tir rugs, most made on small village looms within a day's mule-ride. Get there early. By late afternoon the action winds down and the carpets are rolled away until the following week.

A story
The market is one of the few remaining places in northern Morocco where Berber women sell carpets they have woven themselves rather than through middlemen. Bargaining is unhurried, in French or Tamazight; prices are a fraction of what the same rug will fetch in Fez or Marrakech, and the quality is often higher.
